Thank God… It’s Monday!

Confucius, a Chinese philosopher once said, “Chose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” But that was in BC 551, and things have changed ever since. In our current modern context, it is just not enough to love your job, but be loved by it as well! Indeed when a job is involving, the organizational culture is to value its employee and   express it, the employees feel loved back. And that exactly creates an engaged workforce.

Statistically, a disengaged workforce can be far more detrimental to the organization than can be seen by naked eye.  Lost productivity due to actively disengaged employees cost $370 billion dollars annually to US economy alone (*Gallup Management Journal, 2011). On a worldwide level, 31% of the total workforce is engaged as compared to 37% in India which is the world’s highest and 17% in China which is the world’s lowest (Employee Engagement Report, 2011; Blessing White Research ).

But beyond numbers, employee engagement has been proven to be a leading indicator of financial performance as well. Research has shown that engaged organizations have 3.9 times the earnings per share (EPS) growth rate compared to organizations with lower engagement in their same industry (Gallup Consulting). Employee engagement as a metric of business is getting more attention than ever before. And yet the topic remains elusive and even murky.
